May 2009: The Art Therapy Centre, NSE

The NSE offers a range of expert services for people with epilepsy. These services include cutting edge research, diagnosis, support, assessment, residential care and rehabilitation programmes, including art therapy.

“Art is an excellent forum for people to express themselves and can be helpful for everyone, especially for people who find it harder to communicate their innermost thoughts and feelings.” Quentin Bruckland, art therapist, NSE

Art therapy is based upon the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behaviour, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and achieve insight. It is not intended to reduce seizures; however, by reducing stress, art therapy can indirectly lower seizure frequency.

"The art therapy team, working alongside our NSE artists, have aimed to break down barriers and to give all concerned a vehicle for creative expression. By painting together and having this exhibition it has allowed a collective expressive experience. Having exhibitions and presenting artwork produced in this type of project has the powerful objective in that it will hopefully make the community outside the NSE be aware of the creative talent present in our client group. This will reduce the stigma and prejudice associated with epilepsy."
Sam Lomas, art therapist, NSE

All artists involved in this exhibition will accept commissions. For more information, please call the team on 01494 601472 or email enquiries@epilepsysociety.org.uk

All monies raised from this exhibition are divided between the artist and the charity.

If you would like to donate an Art Therapy Session, the Caring2Give range of care packages is ideal and will make a real difference to the lives of people with epilepsy. The Art Therapy Session package is just one gift that directly benefits those living in the NSE care homes in Buckinghamshire. A supervised art therapy session for a service user to enable them to express themselves and develop their skills through the medium of art costs just £25. The session helps with motor skills and encourages expression and creativity. Art therapy also enables people with communication difficulties to feel empowered.
